Yes, we all mean to give the monthly heartworm preventive to our dog. After all, we know that heartworms and the intestinal parasites can be dangerous and even fatal to our dog. Yet, in the busy lives we lead, giving that monthly pill sometimes gets overlooked. And the cost can be prohibitive on limited budgets.
This spring, Markham Animal Clinic has introduced ProHeart 6 to our practice. This once-every-6 months injection will prevent heartworms and treat any hookworms that are present at the time of injection. It does not prevent intestinal worms and it about half the cost of the monthly preventive pills. Of all the parasites your dog can get, heartworms are the most severe, since the worms live in the heart, causing damage to the heart and lungs, ultimately killing the dog. Heartworm disease is treatable, but the treatment medications are very costly - treatment can reach $1000. So, if you can't remember to give monthly preventive pills, or the cost puts that out of reach for you, give your dog the 6 month injection, ProHeart 6.It just may save his life.
